Brother Ronald,

I would like your comments on an email I sent to a sister in Christ regarding some passages in Zechariah.

You know, I have been studying on a passage that is the strongest "proof text" (IMO) for the notion that Christ is Jehovah, but, it is not used much by Trinis.'   You are probably familiar with the fact that Jehovah is translated as "LORD" (all caps) in the KJV (etc.), and, with that in mind, compare Zech.12:10 w/ John 19:37, and compare Zech.14:3-4 w/ Acts 1:11-12, and compare Zech. 9:14 w/ 1Thess.4:16.  The RSV (which I think is your preferred version) translates Zech 12:10 as "look upon him", but the KJV says, "Look upon me."

I have seen some things that make me question the KJV translation on this point, but many things also vouch for the "me" translation.  The other texts in Zechariah are (as far as I can tell) not contested.  Even if the translation of 12:10 is accurate, then I believe that there is an acceptable explanation that shows how God was pierced via his representative being pierced (c.f. Matt.25:40,44, John 12:44, 15:23, Matt. 10:40, 1Samuel 8:4-7, etc.).  This would account for John's quote of "him whom they have pierced" in John 19:37, because he understood it as of God's representative.

Yet, what about the others? So far, in Christ, I have concluded that they must be understood in the representative sense as well, as one who is called by the name of the archetype (as discussed in Vol.1).  We see this principle in Malachi 4:5, where God says that he will send "Elijah the prophet," but this was a reference to John the Baptist, who came "in the Spirit and power of Elias." Likewise, couldn't Jesus, by the exact same standard, be referred to by the name of the one in whose Spirit and power he came (namely, God)? This is the route that I, in Christ, intend to take on these texts so far, but I would like your feedback.

Your little brother in Christ,
Jason

Brother Jason,

It seems as though I vaguely remembering reading this post shortly after you posted it. I later posted some information concerning some of the scriptures you mentioned, but I probably could not remember where you had posted. I should have moved your post to a new topic when I first read it, so I would able to locate it again. I went today to edit my sticky post and noticed your post was in reply to the post on "Who is Jesus?," so I split your post from the Who is Jesus post and moved it to the Zechariah section.

At any rate, although you probably have already read my posts concerning Zechariah, they are located at:

Zechariah 12:10

Zechariah 14:3,4

Some of the other scriptures I may still address on a later date.

Christian love,
Ronald
