The Omnipresence of Jesus Trinitarians assume that Yahweh is absolutely everywhere present at once at all times in all places, and then assume that this is attribute that only belongs to God Almighty, and then assume further that Jesus also shares the alleged incommunicable attribute of God, and thus by these three assumptions claim this as proof that Jesus is God Almighty. Omnipresence is defined as “present in all places at all times.” Usually this is defined as that God's very being – his body – is present in all places at all times. We need to be very careful in going into extremes either way concerning this. At the same time we should allow the scriptures complete harmony. The Bible teaches a personal God -- a great Spirit Being. The Bible gives Him a home, or locality, and does not teach that His very being is everywhere. It was Jesus who taught us to pray, "Our Father, who is in heaven." (Matthew 6:9) Jesus spoke of the "Father who is in heaven" many times. (Matthew 5:16,45,48; 6:1; 7:11,21; 10:32,33; 12:50; 16:17; 18:10,14,19; 23:9; Mark 11:25,26; Luke 11:2) And then again we read: "Yahweh looked down from heaven on the children of men." (Psalm 14:2) "God is in heaven, and you on earth." (Ecclesiastes 5:2) "Yahweh is in his holy temple. Yahweh is on his throne in heaven." (Psalm 11:4) And yet the declaration of the Bible respecting the Creator's influence and presence is that "the eyes of Yahweh (the intelligence of Yahweh) are in every place, beholding the evil and the good." (Proverbs 15:3) "Don't I fill heaven and earth? says Yahweh." (Jeremiah 23:24) He certainly has the ability to be take knowledge of his creatures in all places at all times, and through the power of his spirit is present in all places at the same time, whether the very being of his body is present in all places at all times or not. Thus the Bible ascribes location to Yahweh, and yet the same time indicates his influence and awareness of absolutely everything. Our finite minds have such a limited ability to comprehend an infinite God with full comprehension. However, we do not understand God to be a pantheistic God; we do not believe that God is every grain of sand, every blade of grass, every atom of a tree, etc. But to have a better appreciation of what the scriptures say about Jesus' abilities along this line, and whether there is proof in these scriptures that Jesus is Yahweh, let us examine each scripture given by trinitarians (and some others) are supposed to offer proof that Jesus is Yahweh.
That Jesus has been given by his God the power to be present in more than one place at once is not denied. (Matthew 28:18; Luke 10:22; John 3:35; 5:22-27; 1 Corinthians 15:27) As the one appointed by God as "Lord" over the church (Acts 2:36; 10:42; Ephesians 1:22; Hebrews 1:9; 3:2), Jesus would of necessity need to be present in some way with his followers. And yet the scriptures also say: 19 Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that so there may come times of refreshing from the presence [face, person] of [Yahweh], 20 and that he may send Christ Jesus, who was ordained for you before, 21 whom the heaven must receive [or, take hold of] until the times of restoration of all things, whereof God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been from ancient times. So in some way also Jesus is recieved, held by, heaven, until the times of restoraton of all things. How is Jesus present with the disciples? The scriptures indicate that he is present by means of the holy spirit, which spirit was given to Jesus by God. -- 1 John 3:24; 4:13; Acts 1:4; 2:33; John 15:26; See also: John 14:17,26; Acts 1:5,8; 9:31; Romans 8:1,9-17; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; 2 Corinthians 1:22; 3:3; 12:18; Philippians 2:1; 2 Timothy 1:14. There is nothing, however, in Matthew 18:20; 28:20 that offer any proof that Jesus has an incommunicable attribute of Yahweh. The idea has to be added to and read into these scriptures. John 3:13 No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven. John 3:13 is often presented by trinitarians and others as proof that Jesus is God Almighty, since it supposedly shows that Jesus is omnipresent. Taken as it reads in several translations, this would have Jesus in heaven and on earth at the same time. While such does not necessarily prove that Jesus would be omnipresent (present everywhere all at once), it would indicate that he could at least be in two places at once. The words "ascended" and "descended are the Greek ana-bai no and kata-baino; meaning to ascend, to spring up; and to descend, to come down. The Greek words translated "except" are *Ei me*, meaning but, except, save, excluding. Jesus actually spoke these words about three years before his ascension. Therefore, we have no reason to think that he was referring to his later ascension or that even that Jesus was referring to this own ascenstion. Nevertheless, Jesus had previously been in heaven before he came to earth, and thus we do have reason to think that Jesus did refer to his heavenly origin. "Jehovah formed me as the beginning of his way, the first of his works of old" (Proverbs 8:22 American Standard Version Margin). We need to consider the context, for Jesus had just stated: "If I have told
you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I
tell you about heavenly things?" (John 3:12) What Jesus is speaking of in
the context is his witness concerning heavenly things. He is saying that no human has ever
ascended into the spiritual heavens so that he could tell of such things,
excluding the Son of Man, not because he had already ascended to where he
had been before (Mark 16:19; John 6:62; 13:1; Acts 3:20,21; Ephesians 1:20;
Hebrews 4:14; 9:24; 1 Peter 3:22), but because he had descended from the
heavens -- from the presence of his Father, the only true God. (John
17:1,3) Thus no man had ever so ascended into the spiritual realm of God's
presence where Jesus had been before he came to the earth, and where he
returned after being raised from the dead. Jesus alone had
previously been in heaven, and had descended from the heavens. Thus, this scripture actually proves that Jesus was with his Father before earth, not that he was in two places at once. The reference to the one who descended from heaven is concerning Jesus. And then concerning mankind in general, Jesus said: "No one has ascended into heaven." Adam Clarke states in his commentary concerning John 3:13: "This seems a
figurative expression for, No man hath known the mysteries of the kingdom of
God; as in De 30:12; Ps 73:17; Pr 30:4; Ro 11:34. And the expression is
founded upon this generally received maxim: That to be perfectly acquainted
with the concerns of a place, it is necessary for a person to be on the
spot. But our Lord probably spoke to correct a false notion among the Jews,
viz. that Moses had ascended to heaven, in order to get the law. It is not
Moses who is to be heard now, but Jesus: Moses did not ascend to heaven; but
the Son of man is come down from heaven to reveal the Divine will." Trinitarians often like to point to the term "son of man" as representing Jesus' human form, not his divine form. If the term "son of man" here refers to Jesus' human form, then this would have his human form in heaven at the same he is on earth; it would not indicate a divine form in heaven and a human form on earth as some have argued. However, the oldest Greek MSS (the Sinaitic and the Vatican as well as many
other manuscripts) omit the last four words of verse 13 with evident
propriety, for although our Lord is now in heaven, he was not in heaven at
the time he addressed Nicodemus. Thus many translations render this verse
similar to Rotherham: "And no one hath ascended into heaven save he that out
of heaven descended, The Son of Man." Additionally, Biblical Numerics indicate that this phrase, "which is in heaven", is spurious. Ivan Panin's translation does not include this phrase: "And no one hath ascended into the heaven, except he that descended out of the heaven, the Son of man." Panin, I am sure, being a trinitarian as well as a believer in the immediate passage of believers into heaven at death, would have tried every way he could to prove this phrase to be true by Biblical Numerics, but evidently concluded it to be an interpolation that could not be substantiated by numerics. You can visit our page on Biblical Numerics online . In view of the above, we can see that there is nothing in John 3:13 that proves that Jesus is Yahweh, nor is there anything in this verse that proves that Jesus was existing on two planes of existence at once. Colossians 3:11
Colossians 3:11 is sometimes quoted out of context by trinitarians as proof that Jesus is omnipresent. If this were what is meant by Paul's words in Colossians 3:11, then, in effect, this would make Christ actually and literally all things in the universe, a pantheistic doctrine. Actually, the context shows that Colossians 3:11 is speaking about Christ as related to all races and peoples, whether Jew or Greek, circumcised or uncircumcised, etc. Christ is for all believers of any race or people who "have put on the new man". (Colossians 3:10) Therefore, Paul states: "Put on therefore, as God's elect, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do." -- Colossians 3:12,13. Nothing but the grace of Christ is effectual; no circumcision, no keeping of the law, no ceremonies, no human energies, not what we are according to flesh and blood, nor in fact anything could add one whit to the believer's standing before God in Christ. Christ is the center that God has provided. An appreciation of Christ is needful which comprehends a personal acquaintance with Him that grows and grows with each passing day. The believer truly needs to remember how distinctly Jesus fills every office connected with his salvation and reconciliation to his God - how Christ is Savior, Redeemer, Advocate, Master, Lord, High Priest, and all else, for his God has put all things in his hand, with the evident exception of God himself. Nevertheless, any idea of trinity, or that Jesus is God, has to be added to and read into Colossians 3:11. Last update of this study: January 31, 2005
